Indiana Nonprofit Database

A comprehensive database of Indiana nonprofits, using a unique methodology that combines a variety of data sources, to document the size and regional distribution of the Indiana nonprofit sector. This database serves as the basis for subsequent work in the project. A searchable, web-based listing of Indiana nonprofits from our database is under development. Personal Nonprofit Affiliations

A survey of Indiana residents examining their personal affiliation with Indiana nonprofits as employees, worshippers, volunteers, or participants. For details, see the Personal Affiliation Survey.

Management Capacities and Challenges of Central Indiana Nonprofits

This survey of nonprofits in the nine-county Indianapolis area finds that obtaining funding, volunteers, and new members or clients are among their biggest challenges. The preliminary findings also indicate that most area nonprofits have basic management structures and policies, but many lack other standard organizational tools. The report offers benchmarks nonprofits can use in their own evaluation and planning. The Indiana Nonprofit Survey is online at the Indiana Nonprofits web site.

Nonprofit Employment in Indiana

This report shows that nonprofits are an economic force in Indiana. Nearly one in 13 paid employees, or about 8 percent of the workforce, work in nonprofits. More Hoosiers are employed in the nonprofit sector than in construction, nondurable manufacturing, or the state’s entire finance, banking, insurance and real estate industries. Indiana’s 222,000 nonprofit employees earned about $6 billion in wages in 2001. The study includes some data comparing Indiana findings with other state studies conducted by The Johns Hopkins University. The report includes detailed information by county, region, and type of nonprofit as well as industry and sector comparisons. It is available on the Indiana Nonprofits project Web site.

Indiana Nonprofits Profile

A new report profiling the Indiana nonprofit sector shows that many organizations are constrained by their relatively small sizes and low revenues, among other revealing results.

The report, prepared by researchers at the Center on Philanthropy at Indiana University Center and the School of Public and Environmental Affairs (SPEA) found a sector made up of a significant number of small organizations with small budgets carrying out a diverse set of activities.The report is believed to be the most comprehensive of its kind ever compiled because it includes all types of nonprofits, including several types of organizations rarely captured in previous studies.

A recent report from the Indiana Nonprofits: Scope and Community Dimensions project reveals that while many Indiana nonprofit organizations have the monitoring tools in place to easily demonstrate accountability, a significant minority fall short. Indiana Nonprofits: Affiliations, Collaborations and Competition

This is the fifth report in a series based on the survey of Indiana charities, congregations, advocacy, and mutual benefit nonprofits that is part of the Indiana Nonprofits: Scope and Community Dimensions project. The report concludes that, contrary to common belief, the majority of Indiana's nonprofits—nearly 60 percent—do collaborate and network with other organizations.
