The Center is tracking confirmed reports from U.S. nonprofit organizations of donations they have received in response to the March 2011 earthquake and subsequent tsunami that struck Japan.
The table below illustrates the cumulative dollar amount of contributions received by 501(c)(3) organizations for relief efforts in Japan and the total number of organizations reporting. The Center will continue to update the list periodically.

Below is information about U.S. philanthropic organizations and the amount of gifts received in response to the September 11 attacks, the 2004 Asian tsunami, the 2005 Gulf Coast hurricanes, the 2005 Pakistan earthquake and the 2010 Haiti earthquake.
As part of the Center's 2009 summit, Planning Disaster: The Role of Philanthropy in Anticipating and Responding, the Center gathered a list of research projects and resources on philanthropy's role before and after disasters.
The Center on Philanthropy and the McCormick Foundation Conference Series convened this invitational summit to explore ways to help our communities plan effectively for and respond to disasters, which prompt unique intersections of government, corporate, nonprofit, and individual relief efforts and inspire volunteerism and charitable giving.
The Center on Philanthropy collects information using a variety of sources:
- Reports from recipient organizations (given top priority)
- Organizations’ websites and press releases
- Other lists (such as The Chronicle of Philanthropy, the Foundation Center and U.S. Chamber of Commerce)
- Other news stories
Totals represent U.S. contributions from individuals, corporations, and foundations to Haiti relief efforts by registered 501(c)3 organizations. They do not include the aid delivered or pledged by the U.S. government. The listing does not contain every organization raising funds for relief. The list is not an endorsement for any agency or entity listed.
