INDIANAPOLIS - The Lake Institute on Faith & Giving, a part of the Center on Philanthropy at Indiana University, has awarded its 2010-2011 Lake Doctoral Dissertation Fellowship in the amount of $22,000 to Jared Peifer, a Ph.D. candidate at Cornell University.

Peifer’s research explores the intersection of religion and the economy, with an emphasis on religious giving and religious investing. His dissertation, Religion in the Financial Market: A Look at Religiously Affiliated Mutual Funds examines how religious values impact behavior in the financial market, including how these funds screen or try to change the behavior of corporations they deem to be unethical. The research also looks at how religious fund employees and donors manage the tension between religion and finance.

A native of Lancaster County, Pennsylvania, Peifer graduated from Temple University in 2003 with a bachelor’s degree in economics and sociology.

The Lake Doctoral Dissertation Fellowship is a one-year grant given annually and provides a stipend to a scholar whose primary research focus is in the area of religion and philanthropy or faith and giving. It is intended to support the final year of dissertation writing. The first fellowship was awarded in 2008.
