Thank you for your interest in the Master of Arts/Executive Master of Arts in Philanthropic Studies . After you read these instructions, you can apply online to the program by accessing the application form of the University Graduate School .

Dual Degree Options

To apply for the following dual degrees, you must apply to each program separately.
  • Master of Arts in Philanthropic Studies and Master of Public Affairs in Nonprofit Management
  • Master of Arts in Philanthropic Studies and Master of Arts in Economics
  • Master of Arts in Philanthropic Studies and Master of Arts in History
  • Master of Arts in Philanthropic Studies and Master of Science in Nursing

Deadlines Fall Spring
Master of Arts in Philanthropic Studies February 1 November 15
Executive Master of Arts in Philanthropic Studies February 1*
International Applicants January 1*

*February 1 [January 1 for international applicants] is a priority deadline for consideration for departmental aid. We will continue to accept applications after February 1 st on a space available basis. Prospective students are encouraged to submit their applications as early as possible.  

If you are not a U.S. citizen or have a bachelor's degree from a non-U.S. institution, you may use the online application.  As an alternative, an international application can be downloaded from the International Affairs' website at http://www.iupui.edu/~oia/admissions/.  Copies of the international application are also available from the Center on Philanthropy, or from the International Affairs Office, Union Building 207, Indiana University-Purdue University at Indianapolis , 620 Union Drive , Indianapolis , IN 46204 (telephone 317/274-7294).  The deadline date for international applications is January 1st.

Please use the checklist below as a guide in completing your application for admission.  All of your application materials, including GRE scores, transcripts, and recommendations, need to be received by the Center on Philanthropy before your application can be considered complete and reviewed for admission.

APPLICATION CHECKLIST

  • The Application Fee

  • A $45 non-refundable application fee is required. The application fee for international students is $55 . If you are applying online, payment instructions require payment by credit card.

    The following information may be helpful to you as you complete application:

  • Three recommendations are required.
    Forms are available in the online application and also through the Center on Philanthropy.  If you are giving forms to your three recommenders, please fill in:

    Your name:
    Degree sought: eg. - M.A. in philanthropic studies
    Your signature either waiving or not waiving your right to inspect the recommendation.

    If possible, at least two of the recommenders should be professors.  If not, recommenders should be individuals who are familiar with your knowledge, skills, and abilities and how they relate to your potential to do scholarly work.

    • 300-500 Word Statement of Purpose regarding your current goals and plans for your professional career, explaining your reason for selecting philanthropic studies as your field of graduate study, and indicating why you are interested in attending Indiana University .  This form is available in the online application. 

    • A current resume/curriculum vitae can be included in a section provided in the online application.

    • An Official Report of Scores for the Graduate Record Examination General Test is required . (NOTE: The GRE is not required for the Executive M.A. in Philanthropic Studies.)

    • Please request Educational Testing Services to send your scores directly to us.

      Use "R1325" (Indiana University - Purdue University at Indianapolis) as your institution code when requesting a location for the test to be sent.  Be sure to initiate your request to have scores reported early enough that they will be received by the appropriate deadline date.

    • Copy of all official transcript(s) of all previous college and university work.  These must include an official transcript for each college and university attended.  A bachelor's degree from an accredited college or university is required for admission.  The transcripts should be mailed directly by the registrar to the Center on Philanthropy at the address above.

    • A TOEFL score is required for those whose native language is not English.

    ADMISSION CRITERIA

    • Prior Academic Work
      A bachelor's degree from an accredited college or university is required with a minimum of a 3.0 overall grade point average (on a scale of 4.0), and a minimum of a 3.0 average in your major field.  Applicants with a grade point average below 3.0 may be considered for conditional admission.

    • Results of the Graduate Record Examination General Test
      Applicants are expected to demonstrate an appropriate level of proficiency on the GRE or a comparable proficiency test (i.e., GMAT, LSAT).  Results from the Graduate Record Examination taken within the past five years are required.  The Graduate School of Indiana University has established the following minimum criteria for GRE scores:
      > 1,000 combined verbal and math

      Note: Applicants whose academic records fail to satisfy the GRE standards may be admitted to the program on a conditional basis, in which case their status will be reviewed after a fixed period of time to determine whether they may continue in the program.

    • Recommendations
      Preference will be given to those candidates who can demonstrate ability to successfully perform academic work. In selecting your recommenders, try to select those people who can best speak to indications of your ability to successfully do academic work.  If a recommender is not in an academic environment, encourage him/her to assess your knowledge, skills, and abilities as they relate to your ability to do academic work.
    • Essay
      Preference will be given to those candidates whose goals and interests, broadly speaking, match those of the Master of Arts in Philanthropic Studies and its curriculum.


    FINANCIAL AID

    A number of fellowships, assistantships and scholarships are available to graduate students in Philanthropic Studies. The entire MA application must be received by February 1 st to receive primary consideration for these awards.

    • Scholarships
      Several full tuition scholarships are awarded on a competitive basis by the Center to incoming students.

    • Graduate Assistantships
      Graduate assistantships are awarded on a competitive basis to incoming students.  Awardees receive tuition remission, and a stipend with a work requirement.

    • Hearst Fellowships
      Two Hearst Fellowships are available each year for minority students who have committed their lives to understanding the voluntary and philanthropic sector.  Hearst Fellows are awarded a $9,000 stipend and a tuition scholarship.  A statement of interest for the Hearst Fellowships as well as the completed MA application must be received by February 1st .  Interested persons should contact the Center on Philanthropy for more information.

    Loan programs and work programs are available to graduate students.  Requirements vary greatly, so interested students should contact the IUPUI Office of Student Financial Aid concerning these programs.  Other financial aid sources are the Guaranteed Student Loan and the Plus Loan Programs.  Information about and applications for these programs are available from the IUPUI Office of Student Financial Aid, Cavanaugh Hall, Room 103, telephone 317/274-4162.  Financial aid is available for the summer sessions, as well as for the fall and spring semesters.  The priority deadline for all applications is February 1st , but applications may be considered at other times.

    APPLICATION DEADLINE

    Individuals whose applications are not complete may take a limited number of graduate courses as graduate non-degree students before their applications are complete.  For information about admission and registration as a graduate non-degree student, contact the IUPUI Graduate Office, Union Building 203, 620 Union Drive , Indianapolis , IN 46202 , telephone 317/274-1577, Monday through Friday, 8:00 - 12:00 or 1:00 - 5:00 .
