IU Trustees Approve New Undergraduate Major in Philanthropic Studies for IUPUI

We’re looking for students who want to change the world, who want a career that uses their heads and their hearts. This exciting bachelor’s-level program is designed to prepare students for entry-level careers in philanthropy and nonprofits, one of the fastest-growing fields across the globe. Estimates indicate more than 50,000 positions are available annually in the U.S. Nonprofits span the gamut of interests, from Habitat to Humanity to the YMCA to the NCAA.

Based in the liberal arts, students will develop critical thinking and practical skills that will prepare them to create and run high-impact nonprofit programs and make them more attractive to all employers. It’s perfect for the curious or undecided student: understanding philanthropy and nonprofits also equips students for careers in public service, healthcare, human services, the arts and the environment. The Center on Philanthropy, the national leader in philanthropy education, is the right place to learn about and practice philanthropy.

Courses are currently available, and pending final approval in Spring of 2010 by the Indiana Higher Education Commission, the B.A. degree in Philanthropic Studies will be the nation’s first undergraduate degree in Philanthropic Studies. It will require 124 credit hours of which 33 hours are in Philanthropic Studies and nonprofit management. Students completing the undergraduate major in Philanthropic Studies will be attractive candidates for graduate and professional programs in nonprofit management and public affairs, business, social work, sociology, and many other disciplines. Graduates will be well-positioned to compete for jobs in prestigious institutions and organizations across the nonprofit sector.
