Fellowships, Scholarships, and Assistantships

The Center on Philanthropy offers fellowships, assistantships, and scholarships to students of philanthropy.

Scholarships and Fellowships

The University Fellowship is awarded to a limited number of IUPUI graduate students. These highly competitive awards currently carry a stipend of $12,000 for Masters students and $22,000 for Ph.D. students as well as the waiver of most fees for students, and are for the fall-spring academic year. The M.A. and Ph.D. Program Admissions Committee nominates qualified students for the University Fellowship.

The Hearst Minority Fellowship allows two minority students each year to come to Indianapolis to study philanthropy through the MA and PhD in Philanthropic Studies degree program.

In 2007, CCS established the five-year annual William B. Hanrahan Fellowship at the Center on Philanthropy in recognition of William B. Hanrahan’s contributions to the field and CCS’s commitment to shaping future leadership within the fundraising profession. The fellowship is awarded to an outstanding student pursuing a master's or doctoral degree in Philanthropic Studies at the Center on Philanthropy. The Fellow’s work will facilitate and enhance ongoing research at the Center, bringing together research and practice to help increase the knowledge and tools that strengthen the tradition and practice of philanthropy. The Center is proud to be closely associated with CCS.

The Dickinson-Stone-Ilchman Fellowship for Graduate Education was created to serve doctoral students in honor of Dr. Warren Ilchman’s wife, Alice Stone Ilchman, her father and mother, Dr. and Mrs. Donald Stone, her sister, Mrs. Nancy Stone Dickinson, and his brother-in-law, Dr. Richard Dickinson. This gift is to be used to support one graduate fellowship per year at the Center on Philanthropy. The student recipient should be a student pursuing a doctorate degree in philanthropic studies at the Center and should be selected solely on a student’s merit as defined by the Center’s guidelines. The recipient of the Fellowship will be determined by the Doctoral Program Committee of the Center.

The Eugene R. Tempel Fellowship, established by P.A. Mack, Jr. was established to support one fellowship per year for a student who is pursuing a doctorate degree in philanthropic studies and is selected solely on a student’s merit as defined by the Center’s guidelines. The Fellowship is renewable for a five-year period to allow the recipient to complete his/her doctoral studies.

The Islamic Society of North America (ISNA) in conjunction with The Kingdom Foundation announces the Prince Alwaleed Bin Talal ISNA Fellowship Program. This Fellowship is being offered to Muslim Americans pursuing graduate studies in the management and governance of non‐profit organizations in the United States. The main objective of this program is to train effective and knowledgeable Muslim leaders who are able to advance programming, fundraising, and other essential skills needed to lead successful non-profit organizations in the United States. Every year a total of ten fellows will receive a substantial scholarship and stipend. Scholarship awards cover up to $11,000 per year for tuition and required fees and provides a stipend of $1,000 per month for nine months.

Graduate Assistantships

Graduate Assistantships are awarded on a competitive basis to incoming students. Awardees receive tuition assistance, health insurance and a stipend with a work requirement.

Alumni Association Scholarship 2009-2010

The Center on Philanthropy's Alumni award the 2009-2010 scholarship to Lijun He. The scholarship was established to help students like Lijun complete their Master of Arts in Philanthropic Studies or Master of Public Affairs in Nonprofit Management. Applicants must be a current student at IUPUI or Indiana University-Bloomington, pursuing an MA in Philanthropic Studies or an MPA with a concentration in nonprofit management.

The scholarship recipient will be chosen using the following criteria:

  • Essay
  • Academic, volunteer and/or professional achievement
  • Financial Need
