The Fund Raising School promotes the highest standards in professional fundraising and the body of knowledge informing
the philanthropic tradition. That is why we offer a Certificate in Fund Raising Management through the Center on
Philanthropy at Indiana University. This certificate recognizes and rewards a commitment to fundraising leadership through
successful completion of four key courses offered by TFRS.
To acknowledge better the wide range of fundraising expertise faced by different types and sizes of nonprofit
organizations, The Fund Raising School has revised its requirements for the Certificate in Fund Raising Management.
Starting in 2009, all individuals beginning the Certificate sequence will be required to take Principles & Techniques of
Fundraising or Faith and Fundraising and any three of the following courses:
- Developing Annual Sustainability
- Developing Major Gifts
- Managing the Capital Campaign
- Planned Giving: Getting the Proper Start
- Interpersonal Communication for Fundraising
"Principles & Techniques of Fundraising"is the foundation of the curriculum for all the other courses and should be
taken first to establish the context and vocabulary for the rest of the courses. If participants choose to take other
courses first, they must understand that there will be an inevitable recurrence of terms and concepts which flow from the
foundation course. Because “Principles & Techniques of Fundraising” is the course establishing the philosophy and context
for all of the other courses, no waiver for the course is given.
Individuals who began the Certificate sequence prior to 2009 will have the option of completing the Certificate in Fund
Raising Management using the former course requirements of Principles & Techniques of Fundraising, Developing Major Gifts,
Interpersonal Communication for Fundraising, and Planned Giving: Getting the Proper Start.
The Certificate recognizes completion of a curriculum of knowledge-based courses. It is not a recognition of fundraising
experience. The Certificate is not equivalent to the designation Certified Fund Raising Executive (CFRE), a credential
offered by CFRE International.
