The Spring 2008 Center on Philanthropy Research Fund grant cycle is now closed. Please check back in a year for the next cycle.
The Center on Philanthropy at Indiana University conducts, coordinates, and
supports research building a broad base of knowledge about the causes and
consequences of philanthropic behavior involving individuals, communities,
and institution. Faculty members from all disciplines conducting related
research are encouraged to apply.
Research Priority Areas:
- The origins, defining characteristics, and development of
philanthropic traditions across time, cultures, and social groups;
- The role of philanthropic and nonprofit organizations in
shaping communities and civil society;
- The sources, motivations, and practices involved in generating,
allocating, and managing philanthropic resources of time and money;
- The types, scope, and composition of philanthropic resources and
their significance for nonprofit organizations and the sector as a whole;
- The governance and management of philanthropic institutions and
nonprofit organizations.
There are two requests for proposal:
Center on Philanthropy Research Fund-General
Grants of up to $25,000 may be awarded to Indiana
University faculty for research relating to issues facing philanthropy
and nonprofit organizations. Research related to philanthropy and
race and culture, women, and youth will receive special consideration.
However, projects with a heavy emphasis in these areas will be even more
competitive in the specific RFP.
Center on Philanthropy Research Fund – Specific
There are two mechanisms for support in the Specific RFP. Round 1 funding
may be granted by making a proposal that convinces the Research Committee
that a specific research area (related to philanthropy) has promise both
intellectually and in terms of attracting external funding. If the faculty
member receives a Round 1 grant she will use the grant funding to develop this
proposal into a more detailed concept paper. The first round awards will
be $5,500 for one investigator or $10,000 for multiple investigators. The
concept paper may then be used for Round 2 funding.
If the faculty member receives a Round 2 grant she will use the grant funding
to develop a proposal for external funding. At the conclusion of the grant
period this proposal will be submitted for external funding by the faculty
member. Funding may be up to $20,000 for Round 2. Faculty may apply for
Round 2 without having receiving Round 1 funding.
