  • American Express Charitable Gift Survey
The American Express Charitable Gift Survey is the first nationally representative study to address: 1) How much do people give at any one time to types of charitable recipients? and 2) Do online and offline donations differ in size?
  • Business Civic Leadership
Conducted in partnership with the U.S. Chamber of Commerce Business Civic Leadership Center (BCLC) and made possible by funding from the U.S. Department of Commerce Economic Development Administration, the study explored which factors in American communities affect competitiveness and long-term growth, as well as what role the business sector should play in addressing those factors.
  • Donor Stability
We describe the characteristics of “repeat donors” (give in two of the three years surveyed) vs. “occasional donors” (give in one of the three survey years) vs. “persistent donors” (give in all three years). We also examine factors that explain whether or not a household is likely to be a donor in all three years.
  • Giving USA 2008
Giving USA 2008, a publication of the Giving USA Foundation that is researched and written at the Center on Philanthropy, covers estimated giving in 2007, which reached $306.39 billion, setting a new record. Giving is 2.2 percent of gross domestic product, remaining for another year above the 40-year average of 1.8 percent.
  • Portraits of Donors
Portraits of Donors is a new report that reveals specific behavioral patterns and motivations of the nation’s wealthy and ultra-wealthy donors. The report is based on data from the 2006 Bank of America Study of High Net-Worth Philanthropy, the most in-depth quantitative study ever conducted of the wealthiest 3.1% of U.S. households.
  • Philanthropy Among Wealthy
The 2006 Bank of America Study of High Net-Worth Philanthropy is the most in-depth quantitative study of high net worth households aimed at understanding not only their charitable practices, but also the motivations behind them.
  • Paying for Overhead
How do foundations pay for overhead and how do nonprofits approach funders about overhead expenses? This research, based on a study funded by the Aspen Institute Nonprofit Sector Research Fund, shows that education and human services organizations surveyed report insufficient overhead funding. Yet, foundations surveyed said that they offer some type of overhead funding support.
