Mission

1. How does the mission of the organization reflect my own personal values?
2. How recently has the mission statement been updated?
3. Is the mission of the organization relevant to real community needs?

Governance

1. Does the governing board reflect the community that the organization serves?
2. What is the size of the governing board, how often does it meet, and what is the average attendance?
3. Does the board support the organization financially?
4. Does the board get involved in fundraising on behalf of the organization?

Planning, Management, and Evaluation

1. Does the organization have a formal planning process that involves key stakeholders?
2. How recently was the organization's long-range plan updated?
3. Does the organization have a management structure that reflects its programs?
4. Does the organization have the staff capacity and expertise to carry out its programs?
5. How does the organization assess its outcomes and its impact on the community?

Budgeting and Finance

1. Does the organization have a budget that reflects its mission and programs?
2. Do the organization’s administrative and fundraising costs relate to program delivery?
3. Does the organization have a cash reserve that helps assure long-term viability?
4. How does the organization invest and manage its surpluses and any endowments?
5. Does the organization have a process by which it is audited?

Transparency and Accountability

1. Does it publish an annual report that contains key indicators of success?
2. In what other ways does the organization hold itself accountable to the public?
3. How does it involve key constituents in its planning and decision-making and how does it report its key decisions to the public?
