Philanthropic Services at the Center on Philanthropy at Indiana University is playing a significant role in the
development of a new generation of informed and committed leaders, philanthropists and organizations that will drive
social change in the 21st century. With finite resources and growing needs, understanding the need, developing
strategies and creating the best plan for the available resources are all vital to most effectively accomplish one’s
philanthropy.
This is a dynamic time in the history of philanthropy worldwide, with the "third sector" playing a greater
role in society than ever before. The practice of Philanthropy is taking a turn, moving from the traditional
practices that historically have met immediate needs and short term goals, to one of strategic or social-change
giving, with the long-term goal of "funding change, not charity." A gradual process, institutions and individuals
that support social-change funding are continuing to increase in number as they seek how to more effectively
address issues at their root causes.
In this work, the great value of the Center is our deep experience and knowledge in the philanthropic sector,
involved in every facet from practice to research. Established in 1987, Indiana University’s Center on Philanthropy
is the nation's most comprehensive university-based resource dedicated to serving philanthropic and nonprofit clients.
We promote the practice and study of philanthropy with the priority of understanding its role in society and
contributing to the knowledge of the field.
Through Philanthropic Services, The Lake Institute
and the Women’s Philanthropy Institute provide a wide range of offerings for philanthropists, donor, professional advisors, and foundation staff
and trustees throughout the US and abroad.
