The Randall L. Tobias Center on Leadership Excellence
Collaboration and partnership characterize the work of the Center on Philanthropy. Through formal agreements and informal arrangements, the Center works with others to improve the understanding of philanthropy and improve its practice. Partnerships occur in each major program area: Academic Programs; Research; and Public Service/The Fund Raising School.
Academic Programs Partnerships
Building Bridges
A W.K. Kellogg Foundation initiative to build bridges between practice and knowledge in nonprofit management education.
Learning To Give - Indiana
An innovative K-12 Education in Philanthropy program designed to educate youth about the value and importance of young people
giving of their time, talent, and treasure for the common good. Learning
to Give develops positive behavior and philanthropic experiences and motivates youth to take voluntary action in their
classroom, their lives, and their communities.
University of Bologna Exchange Program
The Master of Arts in Philanthropic Studies at Indiana University and the Master's Degree in International Studies in Philanthropy (MISP) at the University of Bologna are the first master's degree programs in the U.S. and in Europe to focus on the history, cultures and values of philanthropy. These programs focus on the social, cultural, religious, political and economic roles played by philanthropy and nonprofit organizations in both contemporary and historical settings. An agreement between the two universities allows graduate students to participate in an exchange program that includes internship placements in foundations and research institutions. The agreement also includes the exchange of teachers.
National Center for Nonprofit Enterprise
The National Center on Nonprofit Enterprise (NCNE) helps nonprofit organizations make wise economic decisions to efficiently and effectively pursue their social missions. NCNE's extensive network of academic researchers, business leaders, and nonprofit practitioners form the backbone of NCNE's comprehensive program of educational activities and services that address the critical economic and decision-making issues facing the nonprofit sector. Six members of the Indiana University Philanthropic Studies faculty are either on the NCNE Research Advisory Council or part of NCNE's research network.
Employers of Graduates/Hosts for Interns
The Center's placement record for graduates is directly linked to its strong partnerships with nonprofit organizations in central Indiana and nationally. Placement at graduation is often to the site where the student interned. Among the classes graduating since 2000, placement has included positions at Northwestern University (Evanston, Illinois), North Carolina State Engineering Foundation, the International Medical Corps (Los Angeles), Indianapolis Civic Theatre, and United Way of Central Indiana among others. Research Partnerships
FASTEN
The Center on Philanthropy recently assumed leadership of the Faith and Service Technical Education Network (FASTEN), an initiative of the Pew Charitable Trusts. By fostering collaboration among faith-based practitioners, private philanthropists, and public administrators, FASTEN offers tools, advice, resources, and networking that build the capacity of grassroots faith-based groups to deliver needed social services to people in low-income, urban communities. FASTEN actively identifies best practices in faith-based services and multisector collaboration and produces and disseminates educational materials via its web site, www.fastennetwork.org. Partners in the initiative include the U.S. Conference of Mayors, National Crime Prevention Council, Sagamore Institute for Policy Research, Nueva Esperanza, and Harvard, Baylor, and George Washington universities.
Giving USA , a publication of the AAFRC Trust for Philanthropy
The Center researches and writes the annual report of philanthropy, Giving USA. This study is widely used as a benchmark for fundraising comparisons and as an indicator of the impact on giving of economic, social, and political changes.
Study of Fundraising and Administrative Costs
This multi-year research project, undertaken in a partnership with the Urban Institute, focused on gathering and analyzing data about the costs of fundraising and administration in nonprofit organizations. Project funders were: The Atlantic Philanthropies; Ford Foundation; Rockefeller Brothers Fund; Charles Stewart Mott Foundation; and for dissemination, the David and Lucile Packard Foundation.
University of Michigan Panel Study of Income Dynamics
The world's longest running panel study began in 1968 and now reaches nearly 8,000 households every two years. The Center on Philanthropy collaborates with the Panel Study of Income Dynamics to have questions about giving and volunteering included in the survey.
The Fund Raising School Partnerships
Procura (Mexico)
The mission of Procura, founded in 1995, is to develop professional, ethical and philanthropic personnel, consultants, and volunteers for nonprofit organizations in Mexico.
