HARRIET IVEY AND P.A. MACK TO BE HONORED BY CENTER ON PHILANTHROPY AT IUPUI SPIRIT OF PHILANTHROPY AWARDS

INDIANAPOLIS—The Center on Philanthropy at Indiana University will honor two national leaders at the annual Indiana University-Purdue University Indianapolis (IUPUI) Spirit of Philanthropy Luncheon and Awards Ceremony on Thursday, April 17th in Indianapolis.

Harriet M. Ivey, president and CEO of the Nina Mason Pulliam Charitable Trust, and The Honorable P.A. Mack, Jr. are the Center's honorees.

Spirit of Philanthropy awards recognize individuals, corporations, and foundations that have supported and contributed to university programs and departments through their gifts and voluntary service. The Center is a part of the Indiana University School of Liberal Arts at IUPUI.

Ivey has served since 1998 as the founding president and CEO of the Nina Mason Pulliam Charitable Trust of Indianapolis, Ind. and Phoenix, Ariz. The Trust supports over 150 nonprofits annually and thus far has enabled over 75 non-traditional students to obtain college educations through its Nina Mason Pulliam Legacy Scholars program. Her many contributions to the Center on Philanthropy include serving as the chair of its Board of Visitors. In 2007 she established the Harriet M. Ivey Capstone Student Fund at the Center on Philanthropy.

"Harriet's unique leadership stems from her experience and keen understanding of the entire philanthropic sector," said Gene Tempel, executive director of the Center on Philanthropy. "Harriet shares a vital perspective on what future leaders will need in the field, and she invests in students. We are grateful for her foresight and generosity that allow financially challenged students the opportunity to contribute to the future of philanthropy."

Ivey's commitment to the Center on Philanthropy reflects her distinguished 35-year career in the nonprofit sector, which has included leading the Fannie Mae Foundation, developing educational programs for the Oakland Symphony, raising funds for the San Francisco and Washington Operas, and serving as vice president of the national fundraising consulting firm Brakeley, John Price Jones.

A founding member and past chair of the Washington Regional Association of Grantmakers, she also is a graduate of Leadership Washington and a recipient of its community volunteer leadership award. Ivey graduated with honors from the University of Wisconsin-Madison and earned a certificate in corporate community relations from Boston College.

The Honorable P.A. Mack, Jr. has been a strong, loyal supporter of Indiana University and IUPUI since his days as chief of staff for U.S. Senator Birch Bayh. Dedicated to public service, he was a presidential appointee during the Carter and Reagan administrations and a member and former chairman of the Indiana Commission for Higher Education.

Mack served as an Indiana University Trustee and is a Life Member of the Indiana University Foundation Board of Directors. A distinguished alumnus, he earned an M.B.A. at IU and received an honorary Doctor of Humane Letters degree from IU-South Bend. Reflecting his deep personal commitment to education and philanthropy, Mack was the first chairman of the Center on Philanthropy's Governing Board and has offered invaluable advice and support throughout the Center's history. In 2007 Mack established a fellowship to assist students pursuing doctoral degrees at the Center on Philanthropy.

"P.A. has been a great friend to Indiana University for many years and has served it and our nation with distinction," Tempel said. "He is a steadfast advocate for the Center's role in building the field of Philanthropic Studies, and his generosity will allow us to engage the best and brightest scholars well into the future."

The Center on Philanthropy at Indiana University, the Indiana University Foundation, and IUPUI will sponsor the Spirit of Philanthropy event.

The Center on Philanthropy at Indiana University is a leading academic center dedicated to increasing the understanding of philanthropy and improving its practice worldwide through research, teaching, public service and public affairs programs in philanthropy, fundraising, and management of nonprofit organizations.
