INDIANAPOLIS—To celebrate its 20th anniversary, the Center on Philanthropy
at Indiana University will host a two-day signature event in Indianapolis
November 4th and 5th. The event will bring together national and international
nonprofit leaders, practitioners, and scholars to consider and discuss
changes that philanthropy and the nonprofit sector may encounter in the
next 20 years and how to prepare for them.
The Center's celebration will begin with a public conversation featuring
Patty Stonesifer, CEO of the Bill & Melinda Gates Foundation. Other events
will include interactive discussions with James T. Morris, former Executive
Director of the United Nations World Food Programme and Diana Aviv, President
and CEO of INDEPENDENT SECTOR. The Center’s endowed faculty chair holders
will participate in panels and lead breakout sessions moderated by national
nonprofit leaders. Among other events with major national speakers, the
celebration will close with a discussion on global philanthropy featuring
Stonesifer and Aviv.
Indiana University President Michael McRobbie will award honorary degrees
to three nonprofit leaders. The recipients are Emmett Carson, President
and CEO of the Silicon Valley Community Foundation, Stonesifer, and Dr. Juree
Namsirichai Vichit-Vadakan, Chairperson of the Center for Philanthropy and
Civil Society at the National Institute of Development
Administration (NIDA) located in Thailand.
Founded in 1987, the Center on Philanthropy is celebrating 20 years of serving
philanthropy and the nonprofit sector through education, training, research
and public affairs. The Center has distinguished itself as a pioneer
nationally and internationally and has provided a model for other institutions
by building a new academic discipline, Philanthropic Studies; producing and
distributing rigorous, cutting-edge research on philanthropy and the
nonprofit sector; and grounding its fundraising training program, The Fund
Raising School, in the newest research findings. The Center offers graduate
degree programs, including the world's first traditional-format Ph.D. in
Philanthropic Studies, and programs on women and philanthropy, faith and
giving, and youth, women and people of color in the nonprofit sector.
Unless otherwise indicated, all sessions during the event will take place
at the University Place Conference Center and Hotel, Indiana
University – Purdue University, Indianapolis (IUPUI) at 850 West Michigan
