U.S. AMBASSADOR JAMES A. JOSEPH TO SPEAK ON JUSTICE AND PHILANTHROPY IN INDIANAPOLIS NOVEMBER 1ST
Distinguished National Government and Nonprofit Leader with Hoosier Ties Will Speak at the Center on Philanthropy at Indiana University’s Millennium Lecture Series

INDIANAPOLIS- U.S. Ambassador James A. Joseph, a former Hoosier and Cummins executive with a distinguished career in philanthropy, government, business and education, will speak at the Center on Philanthropy at Indiana University’s Millennium Lecture Series on November 1, 2006. His lecture, “Philanthropy & Equity: The Unfinished American Agenda”, will address issues regarding how justice, faith and public service intersect with philanthropy.

Joseph has served four U.S. Presidents. President Bill Clinton nominated him as the U.S. Ambassador to South Africa where he became the first and only American diplomat to present his credentials to South African President Nelson Mandela. He also served as Under Secretary of the Department of Interior in President Jimmy Carter’s administration, and was a member of the Advisory Committee to the Agency for International Development under President Ronald Reagan. President George H.W. Bush appointed him to be an incorporating director of the Points of Light Foundation.

Joseph has strong ties to Indiana and to the nonprofit sector. He served as Vice President of Cummins Engine Company and President of the Cummins Engine Foundation, both based in Columbus, Indiana and one of the largest employers in the state. He subsequently was president and CEO of the Council on Foundations, a membership organization of more than two thousand grantmaking foundations and giving programs worldwide that provides leadership expertise and legal services to its members and to the general public.

Ambassador Joseph is currently professor of the Practice of Public Policy Studies at the Terry Sanford Institute of Public Policy at Duke University and executive director of the United States-Southern Africa Center for Leadership and Public Values, a partnership between Duke and the University of Cape Town.

Joseph has authored two books, The Charitable Impulse and Remaking America. A third book, The Changing Role of Ethics in Public Life, is near completion. He is the recipient of fifteen honorary degrees, including one from the Center on Philanthropy. His undergraduate alma mater, Southern University, has named an endowed chair in his honor.

The lecture will take place at 6:00 p.m. at the University Place Conference Center and Hotel on the IUPUI campus, 900 West Michigan Street. It is free and open to the public, but requires registration by October 25 at http://www.philanthropy.iupui.edu//Events/joseph_lecture.aspx. Questions about the lecture or registration may be directed to Reagan La Cour, 317-278-8991.

The Center on Philanthropy’s Third Millennium Philanthropy & Leadership Initiative is illuminating the path to fully inclusive philanthropic leadership by continuing its lecture series. The Initiative seeks to help women, young people, and persons of color connect their lives and dreams with the life-changing opportunities of philanthropy.

The Center on Philanthropy at Indiana University is a leading academic center dedicated to increasing the understanding of philanthropy and improving its practice through research, teaching, public service and public affairs programs in philanthropy, fundraising and management of nonprofit organizations. A part of the Indiana University School of Liberal Arts at Indiana University-Purdue University Indianapolis (IUPUI), the Center operates programs on the IUPUI and IU Bloomington campuses.
