TEMPEL NAMED ONE OF NATION'S MOST INFLUENTIAL NONPROFIT LEADERS FOR FOURTH YEAR
Many Others with Ties to Center on Philanthropy at Indiana University Also Selected

INDIANAPOLIS- For the fourth consecutive year, Eugene R. Tempel, executive director of the Center on Philanthropy at Indiana University, has been named one of the 50 most influential leaders in the nonprofit sector, according to the NonProfit Times "Power and Influence Top 50."

The NonProfit Times, a leading trade publication for nonprofit organizations, has published the list for the past four years in its August issue. The list comprises individuals "who have moved the [nonprofit] sector not only during their careers, but more importantly during the past 12 months."

The NonProfit Times cited the AAFRC Trust for Philanthropy's selection of the Center to research and write its premier publication, Giving USA , as one of the Center's main accomplishments during the past year.

Several people who serve on the Center's Board of Governors or Center advisory committees were also named to this year's list. Board of Governors members include Elizabeth Boris , director of the Center for Nonprofits and Philanthropy at The Urban Institute; Emmett D. Carson , president and chief executive officer of the Minneapolis Foundation; and William C. McGinly , president of the Association for Healthcare Philanthropy.

Current advisory committee members who were named include: Kenneth L. Gladish , national executive director of the YMCA of the USA; Paulette V. Maehara , president and chief executive officer of the Association of Fundraising Professionals; and Paul G. Schervish , Director of the Boston College Social Welfare Research Institute. Schervish was also Distinguished Visiting Professor at the Center for the 1999-2000 academic year.  Others on the list who have previously served on Center advisory committees include Sara E. Melendez , president and chief executive officer of I NDEPENDENT S ECTOR ; and Deborah Strauss , executive director of the Information Technology Resource Center.

The Center on Philanthropy, headquartered at Indiana University-Purdue University Indianapolis, is recognized worldwide as a leading center for the research, teaching and practice of philanthropy and nonprofit management.  Through a wide variety of academic, research, public service and public affairs programs, the Center brings together scholars and nonprofit sector practitioners to increase the understanding of philanthropy and improve its practice.
