TWO INDIANA UNIVERSITY NONPROFIT MANAGEMENT PROGRAMS RANKED AMONG TOP 15 NATIONWIDE
U.S. News & World Report Rates Bloomington and Indianapolis Graduate Program

INDIANAPOLIS-Indiana University is one of the top places in the nation to study the management of nonprofit organizations, according to a new ranking released by U.S. News & World Report magazine.

The nonprofit management graduate programs at Indiana University Bloomington and Indiana University - Purdue University Indianapolis are ranked in the top 15 programs nationwide, with Indiana University Bloomington ranked second in the country.  Both programs also were ranked in the top 15 in 1998, the first year in which the magazine rated graduate nonprofit management programs.  They are offered through the School of Public and Environmental Affairs (SPEA) in cooperation with the Center on Philanthropy at Indiana University.  U.S. News & World Report also ranked SPEA third nationwide overall among schools of public affairs.

Indiana was among the first universities to establish academic offerings in philanthropy and nonprofit management when its Center on Philanthropy opened in 1987.  A recent study estimates there are at least 170 colleges and universities offering courses or programs in philanthropy and nonprofit management.

"We are pleased that Indiana University continues to be viewed as a leader in this rapidly expanding field," said Eugene R. Tempel, executive director of the Center on Philanthropy at Indiana University.

"Demand for professionally educated men and women to work in nonprofit organizations has exploded in recent years.  Indiana University's breadth and depth  of resources and its dedication to providing the highest quality learning experiences help us remain in the vanguard as we prepare the next generation of nonprofit sector leaders," Tempel said.

Indiana University has more than 20 academic programs in philanthropy and nonprofit management.  A liberal arts-based Master of Arts in Philanthropic Studies degree is offered, in addition to the Master of Public Affairs in Nonprofit Management degree.

" The rankings are an affirmation of the scholarly stature of our faculty who support our nonprofit courses and research.  Our placement also reflects our close affinity with the Center on Philanthropy and the collaboration and support the faculty give to the Center's missions," said Astrid Merget, dean of SPEA.

With more than 60 faculty members in 21 academic disciplines engaged in research and teaching in philanthropy and nonprofit management, the Center on Philanthropy is the largest and most comprehensive academic center of its kind.  Its mission is to increase the understanding of philanthropy and nonprofit management and improve their practice.
