Native American Philanthropy

You May Not Know This

  • There are 61 Native American foundations which have been identified including a great variety – tribal, national, regional, inter-tribal, public and private foundations, donor advised funds of community foundations, corporate foundations, and community chests or federated funds.

  • The last time that this was assessed, in 1994 Native American foundations granted more than $2,750,000 or about 9% of total foundation giving to Native causes.

  • Other foundations grantmaking to Native Americans increased from $9,994,478 in 1986 to $91.9 million in 2002.

  • The percentage of grantmaking to Native American causes compared with overall grantmaking increased from .0018 during the years in the aggregate of 1984-1988 to .279 in 2002.

  • Native American philanthropic advocates recommend that grantmaking to Native Americans exceed the comparison of the Native American population to the overall population which at present is 1.5 percent. This would represent almost 6 times current contributions.
