the intersections of faith, public service, and philanthropy.
Ambassador Joseph is professor of the Practice of Public Policy Studies at the Terry Sanford Institute
of Public Policy at Duke University. He is also executive director of the United States-Southern Africa
Center for Leadership and Public Values, a partnership between Duke and the University of Cape Town.
Before serving as president of the Council on Foundations (1982-1995), he was president of the
Cummins Foundation and executive director of the Irwin-Sweeney-Miller Foundation. Appointed to
leadership positions by four U.S. presidents, he was most recently the ambassador to South Africa.
