Patrick M. Rooney is Director of Research at the Center on Philanthropy. He directs Center-wide research activities, including the Center's signature research project, a longitudinal study of philanthropy in collaboration with the University of Michigan's Panel Study of Income Dynamics. He also oversees the Fundraising and Administrative Costs Study, a collaborative effort with the Urban Institute. Dr. Rooney manages the Center's ongoing research projects, including the research and writing for Giving USA, which is produced by the AAFRC Trust for Philanthropy, and the semiannual Philanthropic Giving Index, which gauges and predicts the climate for donor giving and philanthropic activity. He is responsible for securing additional funding for Center research projects; works with the Center's Research Committee to determine priorities and fund selected research projects and to evaluate the Center's research work; and is responsible for strategic planning and evaluation.
Previously, Dr. Rooney served as both assistant dean for Academic Programs for Indiana University - Purdue University Columbus (Ind.) and as special assistant to the Indiana University vice president for long-range planning and chancellor of Indiana University - Purdue University Indianapolis (IUPUI).
Dr. Rooney is professor of Economics and philanthropic studies at IUPUI and is a member of the graduate school faculty at Indiana University. He earned his B.A., M.A., and Ph.D. in economics at the University of Notre Dame, a Certificate of Management Development at Harvard University, and a Certificate in Fundraising Management from The Fund Raising School at the Center on Philanthropy at Indiana University. In addition to extensive academic research and publishing, he has conducted a number of research projects and financial analyses to aid Indiana University and IUPUI in their decision-making processes.
