Mapping the Landscape

The Center Studies Philanthropy.

Through its renowned Fund Raising School, the Center trains nonprofit professionals at every level to be ethical and effective. From local fundraisers to national board members and CEOs, it equips them with proven principles and techniques to strengthen their work and their organizations’ impact. Thousands attend Fund Raising School classes every year, both in the United States and abroad: The program has trained professionals in dozens of countries on six continents. The Center teaches them how to do their jobs better—and that benefits both them and their communities.

The Center does not focus just on fundraisers and nonprofit executives. It serves donors, too. Through its service programs, it tackles such topics as strategic giving, women’s philanthropy, and the relationship between religious faith and charitable giving. It helps individual philanthropists find their unique path. It teaches them what to look for in a nonprofit organization, how to make informed decisions, and how to share their wealth strategically. It helps foundations and other granting agencies do the same.

"The Center on Philanthropy is making a difference in cutting-edge research and the highest standards of professional practice. The support of individual donors and foundations is vital to developing the knowledge base about philanthropy and to our ability to provide applied research that meets the real information needs of nonprofit professionals."

Dr. Adrian Sargeant Robert F. Hartsook Chair in Fundraising Center on Philanthropy at Indiana University
