Mapping the Landscape

The Center Researches Philanthropy.

It collects data, documents behavior, analyzes trends. It conducts long-term studies and publishes annual snapshots. It identifies best practices and challenges conventional wisdom. The goal is to increase fundamental knowledge of this complex subject in all its manifestations: giving, volunteering, fundraising, and operating nonprofits, in order to improve the practice and management of all these things.

The Center’s research has become the standard for the field. Corporate and nonprofit executives, scholars, students, politicians, reporters: They all know the Center is the place to go for facts. News organizations around the world, from NBC and CNN to The Economist and The Wall Street Journal, call the Center on Philanthropy when they need the latest information.

Few institutions can match the Center’s credibility, its unique combination of breadth and expertise, methodological rigor, and lack of bias. Research from the Center on Philanthropy feeds the entire nonprofit sector.

This is philanthropy.

"We cannot understand our own community and society—or any other—unless we understand the role that nonprofits play in that society or community and what motivates the people who establish, lead, and support them. The Center on Philanthropy is a central driving force in these accomplishments."

Dr. Kirsten Grønbjerg Efroymson Chair in Philanthropy Center on Philanthropy at Indiana University
