Assistant Director of Research

The Assistant Director for Research will be responsible for conducting research, collaborrating with other staff members and faculty on research projects, creating and maintaining databases and data sets, initiating client contact, coordinating project designs with clients and subcontracts, developing and maintaining relationships with external advsiry groups, and developing research reports.

Task Description% of time spent per year
Conduct research on designated projects of the Center, requiring familiarity with social science methodologies, including case studies. Collaborate with other staff members and faculty on research projects. Coordinate with clients and subcontractors; prepare and submit applications for IRB approval; coordinate research project advisory groups; maintain files, data sets and databases; design surveys. 25%
Prepare written reports and articles appropriate for various audiences and purposes (including fundraising practitioners, academicians, and the general public). Prepare and make presentations to various audiences based on Center research programs. 25%
Manage research programs in cooperation with the director of research including planning of work, identification of project goals, determination of priorities among projects, and assignment of responsibilities among team members. 20%
Respond, as appropriate, to inquiries about research and COP research programs, from the general public, media, students, faculty, scholars, practitioners, and other constituencies. 10%
Represent the Center at various meetings related to research. Travel, attend meetings, and perform other related duties. 10%
Perform other related duties incidental to the work described herein, including supervision of graduate assistants, preparation of research proposals and budgets, maintenance of knowledge base and contacts in the field. 10%

Minimum Education and Experience required
Masters degree is required. Three to five years of experience in project management, case study work, with some quantitative research background. Familiarity with nonprofit sector required.

Knowledge/skills/abilities required
Excellent oral and written interpersonal communication skills, computer skills, managerial experience, project management, time management, task prioritization, customer relations, and ability to summarize results from technical data that allow non-technical readers to comprehend. Understanding of financial models and budget preparation and management. Understanding of basic statistical terms. Use of Microsoft Office programs (Word, Excel, Publisher, PowerPoint). Commitment to and understanding of role of philanthropy, nonprofits, and fundraising.

Mental Demands:
Manage multiple projects and maintain professional communications with different constituency groups. Detailed work, writing, editing, proofreading, multiple concurrent tasks, customer contacts, vendor contact. Problem-solving, maintaining confidentiality. University relations contact, constant interruptions, repeated distractions, considerable change from day to day, must deal with sometimes hostile individuals, continuous noise, frequent deadlines. Long periods of concentration to focus on tasks and detailed work; remembering and documenting instructions; writing down choices made in project planning and reporting, coping with deadlines for multiple projects; communicating with colleagues and clients orally and in writing

Physical Demands:
Conversing on the telephone. Visualizing design concepts. Sitting, sometimes for long periods; lifting up to 10 pounds; keyboarding; moving from room to room for meetings; communicating with colleagues orally and in writing; attendance.
