How to start a nonprofit or foundation
In order to apply for Section 501(c)(3) federal tax-exemption, an organization must first incorporate as a nonprofit corporation. Incorporation happens at the state level and the requirements for incorporating are different for each state. Information about incorporating can be attained in most states through the Secretary of State's office.

Instructions for Form 1023: This site includes detailed instructions for filling out Form 1023, the primary form for acquiring tax-exemption.

Instructions for Form SS-4: An employer identification number (EIN) is your account number with the IRS and is required regardless of whether the organization has employees. This site includes detailed instructions for filling out Form SS-4.

Application for Employer Identification Number--Form SS4: This form will provide you with your "account number" with the IRS.
