The Center on Philanthropy at Indiana University has a rich history of innovation in academics, research and professional practice. Here are just a few highlights from the Center’s first 20 years.
2006
Lilly Endowment Inc. awarded the Center on Philanthropy a $40 million endowment grant to help permanently underwrite the Center's operations.
Adrian Sargeant appointed as the first chairholder for the Robert F. Hartsook Chair in Fundraising
The Fund Raising School presented its first workshop in China for provincial officials attending a conference organized by Brigham Young University and Georgetown University for the China Charity Federation
2005
The Fund Raising School awarded the 1,000th Certificate in Fund Raising Management
The Center on Philanthropy launched its Philanthropic Services unit to play a significant role in the development of a new generation of informed and committed leaders, philanthropists and organizations that will drive social change in the 21st century.
William J. Jackson appointed as the first Lake Scholar in the department of Religious Studies at Indiana University – Purdue University, Indianapolis (IUPUI)
Third Millennium Philanthropy and Leadership Initiative was created to focus on philanthropic leadership in communities of color, among women, and youth
2004
First class of Ph.D. in Philanthropic Studies students admitted
Launched Philanthropy Summit supported by the McCormick Tribune Foundation, bringing together national philanthropic leaders to discuss pressing issues
Women’s Philanthropy Institute became part of the Center on Philanthropy
Randall L. Tobias Center for Leadership Excellence at Indiana University established

Results from the first comprehensive study of nonprofit administrative and fundraising costs released in conjunction with the Urban Institute
In partnership with the Dorothy A. Johnson Center for Philanthropy and Nonprofit Leadership at Grand Valley State University and the Center for Nonprofit Leadership and Management at Arizona State University, and supported by the W.K. Kellogg Foundation, the AIM partnership was formed to share resources and build on each institution’s unique strengths
William H. Schneider appointed as the first chairholder for the Constance M. Baker-Robert S. Ort Chair in International Healthcare Philanthropy
2002
Partnership with the University of Bologna’s Master’s Degree in International Studies in Philanthropy was established, allowing graduate students from both programs to participate in an exchange program that includes internship placements in foundations and research institutions and the exchange of teachers.
Philip Cochran appointed as the first chairholder for the Binford Chair in Corporate Citizenship at the Indiana University Kelley School of Business
Online access to the Joseph and Matthew Payton Philanthropic Studies Library was completed, offering access to journals and periodicals important to the field
Lake Institute on Faith and Giving established to explore the dynamic relationship between religion and philanthropy and to build practical bridges of information, learning and service to the wider public.

The Center on Philanthropy Panel Study, conducted in conjunction with University of Michigan’s PSID, first surveyed more than 7,500 households about giving and volunteering
Giving USA 2001 researched and written at the Center in collaboration with the AAFRC Trust for Philanthropy
Kirsten Grønbjerg appointed as the first chairholder for the Efroymson Chair in Philanthropy
2000
Online graduate certificate in nonprofit management, offered in collaboration with Indiana University’s School of Public and Environmental Affairs, was launched
1999
Summer Institute on Philanthropy and Voluntary Service for undergraduate students established
The Fund Raising School expanded its training into Argentina, Germany and Malaysia
Center on Philanthropy Alumni Association established

Partnership in Building Bridges Between Practice and Knowledge in Nonprofit Management Education, a W.K. Kellogg Foundation-funded project, was established to help third-sector leaders respond to the changing nonprofit management environment with more effective and efficient programs

Eugene R. Tempel appointed as Executive Director
Philanthropic Giving Index, which reveals current trends and future expectations in American philanthropic giving, was established and has measured attitudes about the philanthropic giving climate twice yearly since

The Fund Raising School first offered courses in Mexico in partnership with Procura
Professional Associates development program established
Hispanic Stewardship Development Partnership program launched

Master of Arts in Philanthropic Studies in an executive format established
Association of Black Foundation Executives moved its headquarters to the Center on Philanthropy
Ph.D. minor in Philanthropic Studies approved

First session of Leadership Works, a philanthropic fundraising curriculum developed in partnership with the National Association for Community Leadership, offered
The Fund Raising School’s Certificate in Fund Raising Management established
Association for Research on Nonprofit Organizations and Voluntary Action (ARNOVA) moved its headquarters to the Center on Philanthropy
1993
Master of Arts in Philanthropic Studies approved
Warren Ilchman appointed as Executive Director
1992
First book published in the Philanthropic Studies series at Indiana University Press
The Center on Philanthropy served as the first American host for the International Conference of Research on Voluntary and Nonprofit Organizations
1991
Philanthropic Studies Index launched
First jointly-appointed faculty positions established with other schools and departments within the Indiana University system
Master of Public Affairs with concentration in Nonprofit Management approved as a program of the School of Public and Environmental Affairs
First class of Jane Addams Fellows admitted
1990
First Executive Leadership Institute program held in partnership with the National Society of Fund Raising Executives (now named the Association of Fundraising Professionals)
The first Henry A. Rosso award was presented to Hank Rosso for lifetime achievement in ethical fundraising
1989
Indiana Campus Compact, a membership organization of Indiana colleges and universities dedicated to the promotion of service-learning in higher education, established
1988
Robert Payton appointed as Executive Director
First Annual Symposium on critical issues in philanthropy held
The National Committee on Planned Giving is created by the Center on Philanthropy
The first philanthropy courses were offered on the IUPUI and IU campuses
1987
The Center on Philanthropy at Indiana University established
Inaugural Colloquium was held
Howard Schaller appointed as first executive director
