Getting a Ph.D. in Giving
 At the Center on Philanthropy, the first four people in the nation to earn a doctorate in Philanthropic Studies graduated in May. Nonprofit organizations, donors and communities will be the beneficiaries. Having completed the Center's innovative Ph.D. in Philanthropic Studies program, the graduates will educate
future generations of nonprofit leaders, and their research will help donors give more wisely and enable nonprofits to increase fundraising and deliver services more effectively. Read the press release.
Center Student's Big Give Project Aids Homeless Veterans
For Center alumna Katie Taylor (MA '07), the confidence to enter Oprah's Big Give Indiana quickly gave way to an exciting fundraising campaign that benefitted local homeless veterans far beyond her dreams. As one of two winning projects selected by Indianapolis ABC television affiliate RTV6
to receive $5,000 in seed money to help the mission of a local nonprofit, Taylor's Operation Heartland has so far raised over $200,000 in cash and in-kind donations. The project benefits HVAF of Indiana Inc. (Helping Homeless Veterans and Families) and is designed to furnish a facility that supplies homeless veterans with individually assigned, private apartments. The Indianapolis facility is the first of its kind in Indiana.
 "One of the greatest challenges of the project was its time constraints," says Taylor, herself an Air Force veteran and former fighter pilot. "RTV6
allowed us only 3 weeks to carry out our plan. Solid prioritization and consistent organization were the keys to success in executing Operation Heartland in such a short amount of time, and I credit my graduate classes with the Center for providing me with the skills to do this well, so well that in the end we achieved over double our original goal in terms of funds raised." Giving USA 2008 to be Released Next Month
Giving USA, Giving USA Foundation's annual yearbook of philanthropy researched and written by the Center, provides the latest, most comprehensive information available about how much is given, to what causes, and by whom. The next edition, which will report on giving during 2007, will be released June 23, 2008. Pre-order your copy here.
New Report Published about Generational Giving Patterns
Donors across all generations tend to give roughly the same amount to philanthropic causes, when controlling for other factors such as income, education and frequency of attendance at religious services, according to a new report by the Center in a study funded by Campbell & Company. The study of more than 10,000 individuals across five generations examines differences in giving trends, including motivations for giving, types of causes supported and amount donated.

The Power of the Panel
The spring issue of Philanthropy Matters highlights the Center on Philanthropy Panel Study
(COPPS). It illuminates philanthropy in new ways that can change business as usual for nonprofit professionals. For the first time, researchers reveal the proportion of people nationwide who switch between giving and not giving in different years. The issue also includes articles on giving and volunteering by young adults, women's influence on married couples' charitable decision-making, important findings on generational differences in giving patterns, and innovative researchers asking new questions.
Harriet Ivey and P.A. Mack Honored with IUPUI Spirit of Philanthropy Awards
The Center on Philanthropy honored two national leaders at the annual Indiana University-Purdue University Indianapolis (IUPUI) Spirit of Philanthropy Luncheon and Awards Ceremony on Thursday, April 17th in Indianapolis. Harriet M. Ivey, president and CEO of the Nina Mason Pulliam Charitable Trust, and The Honorable P.A. Mack, Jr. were the Center's honorees. Spirit of Philanthropy awards recognize individuals, corporations, and foundations that have supported and contributed to university programs and departments through their gifts and voluntary service.

Symposium on Women's Philanthropy to be Held in November 2008
Women are changing the face of philanthropy. November 13-14, 2008, the Center will hold a symposium, Moving Women's Philanthropy Forward: Intent, Influences and Impact. Center Convenes Special Summit on Organizational Effectiveness
The Center on Philanthropy at Indiana University convened a special summit on philanthropy and organizational effectiveness in 2007. Sponsored by the McCormick Tribune Foundation, the summit was attended by national leaders from foundations, nonprofits, academic centers, third-sector infrastructure organizations, corporations and government agencies. The participants discussed the issues and challenges of accountability, assessment, and evaluation, often termed "organizational effectiveness."
A new report, Expecting Too Much? Promising Too Much? Assessing Accountability for Grantmakers and Their Recipients, highlights the discussions and key themes that emerged during the summit.
Articles Needed for Indiana Campus Compact National Publication
The 2007-2008 Indiana Campus Compact (ICC) Faculty Fellows are collecting submissions for a nationwide publication that will consist of a series of peer-reviewed articles outlining service learning course plans and best practices by experts in the field. The book will help professors and college and university administrators develop service-learning courses.

Lake Institute on Faith and Giving Announces Next Lake Distinguished Visitor
Eboo Patel, Ph.D., will be in Indianapolis on October 21 and 22 to serve as the next Lake Instititute on Faith & Giving Distinguished Visitor. He is the founder of Chicago's Interfaith Youth Core
(IFYC), an international organization that enables young people to bridge religious traditions to serve humanity. Patel's book, Acts of Faith, details his struggle for identity as an Indian Muslim in America and the path that led to the creation of IFYC.

Leading For Results: A Workshop for New Nonprofit CEOs (June 18-20 in Indianapolis): Effective executive leadership is key to any nonprofit's success. This course combines training in resource development, operations, and leadership so that new nonprofit CEOs are prepared to lead and succeed as capable executives of dynamic nonprofit organizations. The Dynamics of Women's Giving (July 9-10 in Indianapolis): Designed in partnership with the Women's Philanthropy Institute at the Center, this course will provide key insights into women's philanthropy and women's giving, allowing your organization to be successful in engaging women as donors.
