If you are not a U.S. citizen or have a bachelor's degree from a non-U.S. institution, you may use the online application. As an alternative, an international application can be downloaded from the International Affairs' website at http://www.iupui.edu/~oia/admissions/. Copies of the international application are also available from the Center on Philanthropy, or from the International Affairs Office, Union Building 207, Indiana University-Purdue University at Indianapolis , 620 Union Drive , Indianapolis , IN 46204 (telephone 317/274-7294). The deadline date for international applications is January 1st.
Please use the checklist below as a guide in completing your application for admission. All of your application materials, including GRE scores, transcripts, and recommendations, need to be received by the Center on Philanthropy before your application can be considered complete and reviewed for admission.

A $45 non-refundable application fee is required. The application fee for international students is $55 . If you are applying online, payment instructions require payment by credit card.

Recommendations
Preference will be given to those candidates who can demonstrate ability to successfully perform academic work. In selecting your recommenders, try to select those people who can best speak to indications of your ability to successfully do academic work. If a recommender is not in an academic environment, encourage him/her to assess your knowledge, skills, and abilities as they relate to your ability to do academic work.
- Three page essay summarizing professional goals and proposed research area. This form is available in the online application.
- A curriculum vitae can be included in a section provided in the online application.
- An Official Report of Scores for the Graduate Record Examination General Test is required .
Please request Educational Testing Services to send your scores directly to us.
Use "R1325" (Indiana University - Purdue University at Indianapolis) as your institution code when requesting a location for the test to be sent. Be sure to initiate your request to have scores reported early enough that they will be received by the appropriate deadline date.
- Copy of all official transcript(s) of all previous college and university work. These must include an official transcript for each college and university attended. A bachelor's degree from an accredited college or university is required for admission. The transcripts should be mailed directly by the registrar to the Center on Philanthropy at the address above.
- A TOEFL score is required for those whose native language is not English.
- An interview (telephone, electronic or in person) with a member of the Philanthropic Studies Doctoral Committee.
ADMISSION CRITERIA
Admission to the Ph.D. program is based on the criteria of the Indiana University Graduate School and includes completion of a formal application to the Ph.D. program, official undergraduate and graduate transcripts, a minimum or 30 semester credits in Philanthropic Studies or comparable courses with a letter grade of B or higher, competitive Graduate Record Examination (GRE) or equivalent test scores, a three-page essay specifying research and professional goals, a current curriculum vitae, three letters of recommendation, and an interview with members of the Philanthropic Studies Doctoral Committee.
FINANCIAL AID
A variety of financial resources are available to Ph.D. students in Philanthropic Studies, including the University Fellowship, philanthropy scholarships, research assistantships, and teaching assistantships. The entire Ph.D. application must be received by January 15 th to receive primary consideration for these awards.
University Fellowships
First-year graduate students are eligible for a limited number of IUPUI graduate fellowships. These highly competitive awards currently carry a stipend of $18,000 as well as the waiver of most fees for students, and are for the fall-spring academic year. Applicants wishing to be considered for an IUPUI graduate fellowship must submit all application materials by January 15th . Because this includes GRE scores, the test must be taken in the fall. Selection of the fellows is made only once each year in early March.
Loan programs and work programs are available to graduate students. Requirements vary greatly, so interested students should contact the IUPUI Office of Student Financial Aid concerning these programs. Other financial aid sources are the Guaranteed Student Loan and the Plus Loan Programs.
