Hearst Minority Fellowship

The Hearst Minority Fellowship is designed to engage more minorities in the study of philanthropy through one of the graduate degrees offered by the Center on Philanthropy at Indiana University.  Administered by the Center, the Hearst Fellowship is funded by a grant from the William Randolph Hearst Foundation.

Program Description

A 10-month appointment, the Hearst Minority Fellowship begins on August 15 and ends on June 15.  Since the Center believes that education in philanthropy is essential to leadership development, Hearst fellows devote time to:

  • Studying philanthropic experience and tradition
  • Investigating connections between formal education and community service
  • Building valuable connections with others in the Center's programs.
  • Discussing the role of philanthropy in all communities in our society

Study

Hearst Fellows must study on a full-time basis.  Hearst Fellows must pursue one of several academic programs affiliated with the Center:

  • Master of Arts in Philanthropic Studies

Or one of the following Dual Degrees:

  • Master of Arts in Philanthropic Studies and Economics
  • Master of Arts in Philanthropic Studies and History
  • Master of Arts in Philanthropic Studies and Master of Science in Nursing-Nursing Administration
  • Master of Arts in Philanthropic Studies and Master of Public Affairs in Nonprofit Management

The M.A. focuses on the history, culture and values of philanthropy. The dual degrees allow students to earn two master's degrees in a reduced amount of time.

Highlights of the Hearst Fellowship

  • Attend The Fund Raising School's course Principles & Techniques of Fund Raising in Indianapolis.
  • May attend a national conference related to philanthropy or visit another university-based academic center that studies philanthropy.
  • Gain valuable experience by working 10 hours a week at the Center on Philanthropy.

Benefits of the Hearst Fellowship

  • Hearst Fellows receive a stipend of $9,000 for the year to cover housing and living expenses.
  • Tuition is waived.
  • The Center covers other program-related costs (e.g., to attend TFRS and a national conference).
  • The Center offers career counseling, referral services, and information on education programs.
  • Former Hearst Fellows receive reports on the Center's activities, updates on the status of the field, and access to the networks of leaders and organizations involved in philanthropy.

Eligibility

The Hearst Minority Fellowship welcomes applicants from traditionally under-represented groups in organized philanthropy who are either recent graduates, scholars, active volunteers or nonprofit practitioners. Candidates must have a bachelor's degree from an accredited institution in any academic field and be an American citizen. To be considered, applicants must be admitted to either the M.A. in Philanthropic Studies or one of the dual degree programs.

Candidates must demonstrate interest in and commitment to the philanthropic tradition. Involvement in some aspect of the voluntary sector is extremely helpful.
