On September 12-14, 2005, the Center on Philanthropy and the Indiana University School of Journalism convened the 2005 Philanthropy and the Media Summit as part of the renowned Cantigny Conference Series sponsored by the McCormick Tribune Foundation.
The summit brought leaders in the media and the nonprofit sector together to discuss the relationship between journalists and nonprofit professionals, important philanthropic and nonprofit sector issues and how these issues are covered by the media. Representatives of both sectors acknowledged that providing the public with good information begins with building a greater trust between journalists and nonprofit professionals by increasing each field’s understanding of the needs, roles, operations and challenges of the other profession. The summit represents an initial step in strengthening that understanding.
A summary report on the summit includes highlights of key discussions that emerged during the event, including the challenges of reporting on philanthropy and the complexity of the relationship between these two fields.
