CENTER ON PHILANTHROPY TO HONOR PHILANTHROPIC SECTOR LEADERS
Richard A. Behrenhausen, Robert F. Hartsook To Receive IUPUI Spirit of Philanthropy Award

INDIANAPOLIS - Two national philanthropic sector leaders will receive the Spirit of Philanthropy Award from the Center on Philanthropy at Indiana University at a Thursday luncheon ceremony for their leadership and continuing support of Center activities.

Richard A. Behrenhausen, president and CEO of the Robert R. McCormick Tribune Foundation, and Robert F. Hartsook, J.D., Ed.D., chairman and CEO of the philanthropy consulting firm Hartsook Companies, Inc., are this year's honorees.

The Indiana University-Purdue University Indianapolis (IUPUI) awards annually recognize individuals, corporations and foundations that have provided support for university programs through their gifts and their service. The Center is a part of the Indiana University School of Liberal Arts at IUPUI.

Behrenhausen is helping shape the Center's future through his leadership on the Center's Board of Governors and as chair of the Committee on the Board. He also has provided financial support to the Center. He has led the McCormick Tribune Foundation since 1999. Prior to that, he served the foundation in various capacities, including director of development and vice president and chief operating officer. He entered the nonprofit sector after serving the U.S. Army for more than 30 years, retiring in 1991 as a Brigadier General.

"Dick has provided invaluable leadership to help advance the mission of the Center on Philanthropy and its programs," Center Executive Director Eugene R. Tempel said. "We appreciate his guidance and advocacy as the Center on Philanthropy strives to extend its reach and impact throughout the world."

Behrenhausen serves on boards of several other organizations, including the National Strategy Forum of Chicago, the Chicago Council on Foreign Relations, and the United States Naval Institute Foundation. He also is a member of the strategic planning committee of the United States Military Academy, of which he is a graduate.

Hartsook is a respected leader in the world of philanthropic consulting. His firm has conducted more than 1,200 fundraising campaigns that have collectively raised many billions of dollars since its 1987 founding. Hartsook previously served as vice president of Colby Community College, Washburn University and Wichita State University, where he also served as president of the board of trustees. A noted author, Hartsook has written five books and more than 200 monographs on nonprofit fundraising.

"Bob's commitment to help endow a lectureship at the Center allows us to appropriately honor the distinguished career of philanthropic consultant Arthur C. Frantzreb," Tempel said. "We appreciate his support because it allows new generations to learn and understand the ethical and technical basis for the fundraising profession."

The Center on Philanthropy is a leading academic center dedicated to increasing the understanding of philanthropy and improving its practice through research, teaching, public service and public affairs programs in philanthropy, fundraising and management of nonprofit organizations.
