Center on Philanthropy Partnerships

Collaboration and partnership characterize the work of the Center on Philanthropy. Through formal agreements and informal arrangements, the Center works with others to improve the understanding on philanthropy and improve its practice.

Center-wide Partnerships

ARNOVA - An international membership organization dedicated to fostering through research an understanding of the nonprofit sector, philanthropy and volunteerism.

Broadnet USA - A unique website dedicated to the express purpose of connecting nonprofit boards and new leaders.

Indiana Campus Compact - Indiana Campus Compact (ICC) is a membership organization dedicated to the promotion of service-learning in higher education. Members include Indiana colleges and universities who commit their time and expertise to developing students as engaged civic participants. ICC facilitates this development by awarding sub-grants to students, faculty and staff who create projects, curriculum and programs that enhance both the pedagogical experience for each student and the community around us.

The Randall L. Tobias Center on Leadership Excellence - The Tobias Leadership Center, housed in the Indiana University Kelley School of Business, is a university-wide entity that will conduct innovative research and offer curricula and teaching strategies designed to inspire effective leadership skills that change lives and organizations.

Joseph and Matthew Payton Philanthropic Studies Library - The mission of the philanthropic studies collection is to support the educational and research programs of the Indiana University Center on Philanthropy, including the Fund Raising School.

Academic Programs Partnerships

AIM - The Center for Nonprofit Leadership and Management at Arizona State University, The Center on Philanthropy at Indiana University, and The Dorothy A. Johnson Center for Philanthropy and Nonprofit Leadership at Grand Valley State University announce a $7.5 million dollar grant from the W.K. Kellogg Foundation.

Building Bridges Project - An initiative of the W. K. Kellogg Foundation, Building Bridges Between Practice and Knowledge in Nonprofit Management Education aims to help third-sector leaders respond to the changing nonprofit management environment with more effective and efficient programs.

The League - The League is just that, a league of schools, growing fast, that believes students should develop a sense of giving, character, citizenship and volunteering and chooses to promote that through a combination of events, curriculum and community service in a structured way.

National Center for Nonprofit Enterprise - The National Center on Nonprofit Enterprise (NCNE) helps nonprofit organizations make wise economic decisions to efficiently and effectively pursue their social missions. NCNE's extensive network of academic researchers, business leaders, and nonprofit practitioners form the backbone of NCNE's comprehensive program of educational activities and services that address the critical economic and decision-making issues facing the nonprofit sector. Six members of the Indiana University Philanthropic Studies faculty are either on the NCNE Research Advisory Council or part of NCNE's research network.

University of Bologna Exchange Program - The Master of Arts in Philanthropic Studies at Indiana University and the Master's Degree in International Studies in Philanthropy (MISP) at the University of Bologna are the first master's degree programs in the U.S. and in Europe to focus on the history, cultures and values of philanthropy. These programs focus on the social, cultural, religious, political and economic roles played by philanthropy and nonprofit organizations in both contemporary and historical settings. An agreement between the two universities allows graduate students to participate in an exchange program that includes internship placements in foundations and research institutions. The agreement also includes the exchange of teachers.

Employers of Graduates/Hosts for Interns - The Center's placement record for graduates is directly linked to its strong partnerships with nonprofit organizations in central Indiana and nationally. Placement at graduation is often to the site where the student interned. Among the classes graduating since 2000, placement has included positions at Northwestern University (Evanston, Illinois), North Carolina State Engineering Foundation, the International Medical Corps (Los Angeles), Indianapolis Civic Theatre, and United Way of Central Indiana among others. Click here for a list of recent internship sites and employers.

Nonprofit Academic Centers Council - A membership association comprised of academic centers or programs at accredited colleges and universities that focus on the study of nonprofit organizations, voluntarism and/or philanthropy. Established in 1991, NACC is the first group entirely dedicated to the promotion and networking of centers that provide research and education in philanthropy and the nonprofit sector.

Research Partnerships

Giving USA , a publication of the AAFRC Trust for Philanthropy - The Center researches and writes the annual report of philanthropy, Giving USA. This study is widely used as a benchmark for fundraising comparisons and as an indicator of the impact on giving of economic, social, and political changes.

Study of Fundraising and Administrative Costs - This multi-year research project, undertaken in a partnership with the Urban Institute, focused on gathering and analyzing data about the costs of fundraising and administration in nonprofit organizations. Project funders were: The Atlantic Philanthropies; Ford Foundation; Rockefeller Brothers Fund; Charles Stewart Mott Foundation; and for dissemination, the David and Lucile Packard Foundation.

University of Michigan Panel Study of Income Dynamics - The world's longest running panel study began in 1968 and now reaches nearly 8,000 households every two years. The Center on Philanthropy collaborates with the Panel Study of Income Dynamics to have questions about giving and volunteering included in the survey.

Millennium - With generous support from the W.K. Kellogg Foundation, the Third Millennium Philanthropy and Leadership Initiative is a major undertaking of the Center on Philanthropy at Indiana University. Millennium has three major constituencies: youth, women, and people of color. Specifically, Millennium seeks to identify and encourage young people to explore the history, principles, and practices of philanthropy, which will lead to succeeding generations of philanthropic leaders.
