Giving Opportunities

Why give to the Center on Philanthropy?
Philanthropy responds to needs in our society by enhancing human potential and reducing human suffering. The Center on Philanthropy is at the center of philanthropy. It is the source for objective, documented knowledge and provides education and training to ensure the health and continuation of philanthropy through the practice of effective, ethical leadership.

How are we funded?
Generous funding from Lilly Endowment Inc. and the W.K. Kellogg Foundation established the Center and facilitated the emergence of a new field of study. Funding from The Atlantic Philanthropies, the Lumina Foundation for Education, The Annenberg Foundation, and the McCormick Tribune Foundation followed, increasing the Center’s scope and impact and helping it advance to the vanguard of philanthropic leadership. They, along with many individual donors, share the Center’s commitment to ensuring that nonprofits have the capacity and training to fulfill their missions.

Why give now?
The need for knowledge, education and training is stronger now than ever before, as the complexity and size of the nonprofit sector continue to increase exponentially and extend around the globe. Recent, significant grants from Lilly Endowment and the Bill & Melinda Gates Foundation confirm the Center’s leadership role in the field and have inspired others to join in creating greater impact. Additional support will make permanent the Center’s research, academic programs, training and public service, strengthening philanthropy.

How to give?
There are many ways to make your gift to the Center on Philanthropy. They include current gifts of cash, appreciated property, tangible property and closely held stock. Planned or deferred gifts provide additional options for supporting the Center. The most common method is to establish a bequest in your will. Other options, such as life income plan gifts, provide income during your lifetime from the assets donated to the Center. We would be pleased to provide information on those options for your use in financial and estate planning.

ANNUAL GIVING

Gifts from individuals, corporations and foundations to the Center's annual fund provide critical operating support that gives the Center the flexibility to respond to ever-changing needs and new opportunities. Annual gifts may also be designated to reflect the donor's specific area of interest within the Center.

Professional Associates
Donors who support the Center at the level of $300 or greater in a calendar year are recognized as the Center’s Professional Associates. As Professional Associates, they demonstrate a strong commitment to furthering the Center's mission. Benefits of giving at this level include invitations to Center events, special recognition in Center publications, and regular correspondence from the Center's executive director. Professional Associates may support the Center at the following minimum gift levels:

     • Friends--$300
     • Benefactors--$1,000 to $2,499
     • Patrons--$ 2,500 and above

ENDOWED FUNDS

Your endowment gifts allow the Center to continue work large enough that it will never be finished: the strengthening of the philanthropic impulse. They are an investment in the future of that important work. Funding provided through endowments is seed money: they are the catalysts for the creation of a thriving learning environment; the assimilation of new findings into practice; the initiation of a ground-breaking study when it is needed the most; or the development of a specialized training course to address a nonprofit’s most pressing challenges. Endowments can be established through current or planned gifts, or a combination of both.

Leadership Endowments
Visionary, effective academic programs, training programs and institutes call for effective leadership. Faculty chairs and professorships, along with endowed directors’ discretionary funds, enable the Center to recruit and retain accomplished leaders and build renowned programs. We have had the privilege of working with several leading philanthropists to establish five endowed chairs held by exemplary scholars who create new knowledge and reveal best practices to strengthen philanthropy and the nonprofit sector. These include The Thomas W. Binford Chair in Corporate Social Responsibility (in partnership with Indiana University’s Kelley School of Business), The Constance M. Baker and Robert S. Ort Chair in International Healthcare Philanthropy, The Thomas H. Lake Chair in Religion and Philanthropy, The Efroymson Chair in Philanthropy and The Robert F. Hartsook Chair in Fundraising. Leadership endowments enable the Center to move quickly on new ventures and partnerships that push the boundaries of knowledge and practice.

     • Directorships and Chairs--$1.5 to $2.5 million
     • Named Professorships--$500,000

Lectureships bring together practitioners, scholars and philanthropists to examine issues affecting the nonprofit sector. Through this exchange of ideas, lectureships expedite the translation of research into improved practice and increased effectiveness. The Center is honored to host annual lectures established by generous donors, such as The Donikian Family Lecture, which focuses on ethical issues and effective fundraising and The Arthur C. Frantzreb Lecture, which enhances the understanding and appreciation of charitable giving as an important tool for philanthropy.

     • Center Lectureships --$100,000

Student Endowments
Fellowships, assistantships and scholarships shape the future of leadership in the nonprofit sector, nurture the professional development of a promising scholar or practitioner, and expand the body of knowledge in nonprofit leadership. Student endowments are a powerful tool to attract the best and brightest students to study philanthropy. And financial support while studying at the Center enables emerging practitioners to focus on the areas of greatest need or strongest call, undeterred by the limitations of debt upon graduation. These awards also provide nonprofits with interns who enhance the capacity of organizations while gaining real-world experience.

     • Student Fellowships--$500,000
     • Student Assistantships--$300,000
     • Student Scholarships--$100,000

The Fund Raising School (TFRS) has more than 34,000 alumni and trains more than 8,000 practitioners annually in the U.S. and around the world. It has affiliate programs in Mexico, Argentina, Austria, Brazil and New Zealand. Funding for TFRS scholarships helps ensure that individuals from organizations with small budgets have access to cutting edge fundraising training so they can successfully secure the support needed to build their organizations’ resources.

     • The Fund Raising School Scholarships --$20,000

Transformational Endowments
The Center’s health and vitality help ensure the health and vitality of philanthropy and the nonprofit sector. Transformational endowments make permanent the Center’s contributions to both. These gifts allow the Center to push boundaries and to discover and explore new ideas that benefit the entire nonprofit sector.

The School of Philanthropic Studies
The Center on Philanthropy has earned distinction as a leader, both in service to donors, funders and nonprofit organizations and among higher education institutions, in the development of the field of philanthropic studies. Building on more than two decades of expertise and dedication to a more efficient, effective and accountable nonprofit sector, it is now time to take the next step.

Creating and endowing the School of Philanthropic Studies will provide the Center’s important and internationally respected work with the permanence necessary to continue our pioneering guidance of this rapidly developing field. It will create new synergies among faculty across the university and throughout higher education around the world.

The Fund Raising School
These are extraordinary times in the philanthropic and nonprofit sector that demand a fundraising training program distinguished by its grounding in research. The Fund Raising School provides proven expertise in the giving and appeal process; focuses on ethical best practices; fosters an ongoing dialogue between scholars and practitioners; and, as a result, strengthens and improves both academic understanding and professional practice.

The Center’s Programs and Institutes
The Center’s education, research and training programs are the foundation for increased understanding, improved practice and enhanced participation in philanthropy. Endowed institutes focus the Center’s capacities from each of those program areas on specific aspects of philanthropy. For example, the Center’s Lake Family Institute on Faith & Giving serves as a catalyst for public discourse about how religion and philanthropy influence each other and as a guide to enhance that relationship for donors and congregations. Institutes unleash the potential of rapidly growing areas of philanthropy by fostering collaborations among top researchers and sharing the resulting knowledge with donors, their advisors and practitioners.

We are grateful for what you do to advance this essential mission. Your gifts, like those before them, reflect confidence in our work. Your philanthropy nurtures the Center’s progress toward building a better world for all of us. Please contact Kim Gattle, Director of Development and Communications, at 317.278.8918.
